Evaluation of the management of the Huzur Köy Project for substance use disorder
Aims: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Huzur Köy Addiction Treatment and Social Reintegration Center, which provides long-term inpatient rehabilitation services in Turkiye, as a case management–based intervention model.
Methods: This retrospective descriptive study reviewed the medical records of 152 individuals who received treatment at the center since its establishment. Sociodemographic characteristics, treatment processes, and post-discharge follow-up data were analyzed. Staying clean was defined as the absence of psychoactive substance use following discharge.
Results: The mean age of participants was 28.6 years, and the mean age of initiation of substance use was 17.3 years. The rate of staying clean after discharge was 30.9%. Significant associations were observed between staying clean and marital status, family relationships, and length of stay in rehabilitation centre. Especially, the rate of staying clean was significantly higher in individuals who stayed in the centre for 3-6 months.
Conclusion: The Huzur Köy model, with its holistic approach that promotes active participation in treatment and supports social integration, may serve as an effective option in combating substance use disorders. Components such as long-term inpatient treatment, social support and vocational skill development have been shown to increase the success of staying clean. These findings may contribute significantly to shaping rehabilitation policies in Türkiye.
